Lyu Cong

The Bird in the Cage

Dedicated to protesting the tightening of entry and exit management regulations under the name of “security”

By Lyu Cong

Abstract: Through the perspective of a bird, this poem conveys the restriction of citizens’ freedom and the impact on the human body and mind following the promulgation of new entry and exit management regulations. However, no matter how many regulations there are, they can only restrict physical freedom, but cannot shackle the freedom of the mind or the longing for liberty.

I am a bird

From the day I was born

I longed for the sky

Longed for the clear breeze

Longed to fly freely

I wanted to know

Whether the sky has an end

I wanted to fly over high mountains

I wanted to cross rivers

I wanted to see what distant places look like

I believed

I was born to fly

Born to have my own direction

Born to sing freely

In a sky of my own

So

I spread my wings

And took flight time and time again

Until one day

Dark clouds covered the sky

I flew under the eaves

A cage

Quietly appeared beside me

At first

I paid it no mind

I kept on singing

I still believed

That as long as I wanted to fly

I could soar

But later

Someone gently shut the cage door

“Click”

A lock

Was hung before the door

Locking away hope

I stood stunned

I asked

Why

There was no answer

I asked again

What did I do wrong

Still, there was no answer

Only that lock

Grew heavier with each passing day

While the rules inside the cage

Grew wilder with each passing year

Someone told me

It is very safe here

Do not fly

Someone told me

The sky is very dangerous

Do not gaze into the distance

Someone told me

As long as I stay quietly

I can keep on singing

So

I slowly learned to bow my head

I began to forget the smell of the wind

The direction of the clouds

And forget that this pair of wings

Was meant for flying

I also gradually forgot

How deeply I once longed

Longed to fly over mountain ridges

Longed to cross the oceans

Longed to find my own direction

In the free sky

Yet whenever night falls and all is quiet

When moonlight spills into the cage

I still lift my head

Gazing at that distant sky

I sing softly

One note and then another

The singing cannot pierce the cage door

Yet it pierces the long, dark night

That is no song of joy

It is a bird’s

Final longing for freedom

If a bird loses its flight

No matter how large the cage may be

It is nothing more than

A cell without visible walls

I am a bird

A bird that longs for the sky

Longs for the clear breeze

Longs for freedom

Even if the door

Is already heavy with locks

Even if the years

Age day by day

Even if someone tells me

You have grown accustomed to this place

Yet I know—

So long as I still remember the sky

I will not forget—

I am a bird

And a bird

Should, in the sky,

Bravely spread its wings and fly high

And soar in freedom
