Traveling Ten Thousand Miles to DC: A Record of the Protest Against Xi Jinping’s Visit to the US
Author: Tang Xin
Abstract: In September 2026, overseas pro-democracy activists traveled across the United States to Washington, D.C., to protest Xi Jinping’s state visit to the US. Focusing their resistance on opposition to the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarianism, transnational repression, and human rights violations, they conveyed their pursuit of democracy and freedom through street protests and dialogue with Congress.
Under the current waves of global geopolitical turmoil and authoritarian expansion, the awakening and action of grassroots forces are becoming the most resilient bedrock shaking totalitarian regimes. In late September 2026, coinciding with the arrival of Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping in Washington, D.C., for a state visit to the United States, a group of protesters bound by a steadfast pursuit of freedom and democracy completed an arduous ten-thousand-mile expedition across the entire American continent—from the Pacific coast directly to Washington, D.C., the political heart of the United States—to express their strongest protest against the authoritarian regime.
This is not only a chronicle of an action, but also a profound manifestation of free will and the power of grassroots resistance.
I. Across the Entire Country: A Three-Thousand-Mile Long March
On the morning of September 20, 2026, a team of five departed from Los Angeles by private car, successfully arriving in Las Vegas that same evening. On the afternoon of the 21st, the team expanded to seven members in Las Vegas and switched to a more spacious silver-gray Honda Odyssey minivan equipped with a rooftop luggage rack, officially embarking on their journey across the American continent to Washington, D.C.
From the sunshine of the West Coast to the plains of the Midwest, the team crossed countless state lines. In front of a Kansas Historical Marker, beside a deserted highway gas station late at night, and at the rest stops along the way, team members wore white promotional T-shirts printed with slogans such as “END CCP” and “Abolish the Chinese Communist Party’s One-Party Dictatorship, Establish a New China with a Constitutional Republic that Guarantees Human Rights,” leaving behind one resolute silhouette after another. This experience was not only an extreme test of physical strength and willpower, but also a highway relay declaration pushing the wave of resistance from the local level to the entire nation.
Following dozens of consecutive hours of high-speed driving and alternating shifts, the group successfully arrived in Washington, D.C., on the afternoon of the 23rd.
II. The Washington Nightfall and Calling Out in Front of the White House: Combating “Transnational Repression” and Voices Piercing the White House
On the afternoon of the 23rd, Xi Jinping’s special aircraft arrived in Washington. Upon reaching Washington that very evening, the team did not take any rest, heading directly to the vicinity of the hotel where Xi Jinping was staying to launch a nighttime protest. In the Washington night, team members held high slogans such as “Down with the Communist Party” and “Xi Jinping, Get Out,” and unfurled huge blue banners reading “END CCP!” and “Chinese Democracy and Human Rights Alliance (CDHRA),” kicking off an all-weather protest.

Synthesizing reports from major international media outlets and on-site organizations, this protest presented five extremely prominent core demands and characteristics:
Solemnly Combating the “July 1 Evil Law” and the CCP’s Transnational Repression (The Top Priority): The protest site made exposing and resisting the CCP’s “Transnational Repression” its central focus. The protesting masses fiercely denounced the “Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress” implemented by the CCP on July 1 this year, pointing out that Article 63 of the law openly asserts extraterritorial application in an attempt to extend the CCP’s threats and control globally, making it the world’s first evil law to “codify transnational repression into law.” Media such as the Associated Press and Radio Free Asia specifically recorded that the pro-CCP welcoming faction on the scene attempted to use large black umbrellas to block banners, and there were even individuals of unknown background filming and threatening protesters and their relatives inside the Wall (domestic China) at close range. The protest groups strongly condemned this and called on the US government and the international community to crack down severely on the CCP’s sinister hands and infiltration forces in the United States. Adhering to the principles of peace and rationality, the protesting members defended their right to public expression with the assistance of police maintaining order.

Human Rights Guarantees, Stopping Forced Organ Harvesting, and Releasing Conscience Prisoners: Many protesters on-site held up photos of prisoners of conscience and political prisoners such as Gao Zhisheng, Wang Bingzhang, Xu Zhiyong, and Jimmy Lai, shouting “Human Rights in China!” and “FREE JIMMY LAI,” demanding that the CCP immediately and unconditionally release all individuals who have been illegally detained, forcibly disappeared, and subjected to persecution; simultaneously, Falun Gong practitioners and human rights groups shouted “Stop Forced Organ Harvesting!” and “Stop Religious Persecution,” solemnly exposing CCP atrocities.
Minority Groups and Freedom for Taiwan and Hong Kong: The Tibetan community raised high the Snow Lion Flag and shouted “Free Tibet!”, protesting strongly against the July 1 evil law’s assimilation persecution of Tibetan culture and residential schools; the Uyghur community held East Turkestan flags to expose genocide; Hong Kong groups shouted “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times! (FREE HONG KONG!)”; and Taiwanese groups jointly spoke out and published full-page statements in the media, such as “A Stern Warning to Xi Jinping: Democratic Taiwan Shall Not Be Overthrown by Force,” demonstrating strong cross-ethnic solidarity against tyranny.
Performance Art and Symbolic Impact: Protesters donned Qing dynasty imperial dragon robes to satirize the authoritarian assumption of the throne and put on Winnie the Pooh costume suits. Through performance art filled with political humor and symbolism, they became a central focus captured by the lenses of Western mainstream media, including the Associated Press.

III. Grand Gathering of Multi-Generational Resisters: Voices of Pro-Democracy Veterans and a Historic Intersection
In this vanguard resistance on the streets of Washington, D.C. that shook the entire United States, overseas resistance forces spanning various fields and generations achieved an immensely historically significant grand gathering of recent years. Multiple pro-democracy veterans also delivered powerful and resounding speeches on-site and at news conferences:
Mr. Wei Jingsheng, the renowned pro-democracy leader and Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, attended the scene in person to deliver a speech and co-hosted the “China National Affairs Conference” with several scholars and experts. In his speech titled Starting with the Removal of Xi, Focusing on Rebirth, Wei Jingsheng specifically pointed out: “Even if Xi Jinping truly steps down, it does not mean that China’s problems will end there, nor will the CCP’s one-party dictatorship automatically terminate. We in the overseas democracy movement must be prepared to advance our protest objective from ‘opposing an individual’ to the strategic height of ‘ending one-party dictatorship and establishing a democratic system,’ contributing brick by brick toward walking toward freedom and democracy in the future.”
Wang Dan, a leader of the 1989 Student Movement and Chief Convenor of the Chinese Parliament, published an Open Letter to Xi Jinping before heading to Washington, D.C., and personally shouted in front of the White House until his voice became hoarse. In his on-site speech, Wang Dan stated with deep emotion: “We have come to Washington precisely to let Xi Jinping hear the voices he cannot hear inside China, and to tell the entire world that the CCP does not represent China, nor can it ever represent the Chinese people! We stand united against dictatorship and autocracy, and we must never forget those brave individuals imprisoned in jail for pursuing democracy and freedom.”
Wang Juntao, Chairman of the National Committee of the Democratic Party of China, led core backbones of the Democratic Party from various regions to disperse into smaller units and set up multi-point defenses around the White House and the hotel, maintaining high-decibel chants alongside the crowds. The renowned sculptor Chen Weiming led a volunteer team from the Liberty Sculpture Park traveling from afar; he emphasized on-site: “Overseas Chinese cannot forget those suffering persecution inside the Wall simply because we are in a free society. Public protest is precisely challenging that system maintained by fear and political suppression.”

IV. Congressional Dialogue and Policy Communication: From Street Chants to Systemic Connection
The impact of the protest action did not remain merely on the street perimeters of the White House and the hotel. During the event, team members went deeper into conference rooms within Congressional office buildings, conducting intensive panel discussions and exchanges with US Members of Congress, senior political advisors, and human rights advocates. This dual-track model combining “street protest” and “congressional communication” successfully transformed strong grassroots protests against Xi Jinping’s visit to the US, the CCP’s “July 1 Evil Law,” and the CCP’s implementation of “transnational repression” in the US into a key focus at the level of US congressional policy and legislation.
唐鑫-rId14-1280X960.jpeg)
On September 25, the team set out on their return journey, arriving smoothly back in Los Angeles on the morning of the 27th, bringing this cross-country protest trip to a successful conclusion.
This ten-thousand-mile expedition proved that when conviction in freedom is steadfast enough, neither distance nor exhaustion can stop one from speaking out. From the highway dash across the East and West coasts, to the chants on the streets outside the White House that penetrated inside the Wall, and further to the in-depth dialogues within the Congressional buildings, this group of activists together with pro-democracy leaders from all walks of life wrote an indelible historical chapter with their footsteps and voices during Xi Jinping’s visit to the US. Today, as the forces of resistance grow stronger by the day, this roar spanning across the United States will ultimately coalesce into an irreversible tide of democracy.
