Speech at the Chinese Democratic Party Rally in Toronto on June 4th, 2026

Author: Chen Liqun

Friends, fellow advocates: Today, we gather once again in Toronto to commemorate the 37th anniversary of that tragically cruel massacre on June 4th, 1989.

37 years have passed. The gunfire of that night, the rumbling of tank tracks, and Chang’an Avenue stained red with blood still echo in the nightmares of countless people. That was no “quelling of a counter-revolutionary riot”; that was the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime conducting a bloody slaughter against university students and citizens peacefully petitioning—against Chinese people demanding democracy, opposing corruption, and wanting freedom. It used the most brutal method to tell the entire world: this Party has never treated the people as human beings.

We have not shouted the slogan “Vindicate June 4th” for many years now. Because the CCP has long since completely lost the so-called qualification to vindicate anyone. A regime whose hands are stained with the blood of the people has no qualification to judge itself, let alone to “vindicate” the people it slaughtered. The prerequisite for vindication is admitting mistakes, bearing criminal responsibility, and accepting the judgment of justice. Yet, to this day, the CCP is still blockading the truth, smearing the victims, and imprisoning those who commemorate. Not only does it refuse to plead guilty, it instead packages the massacre as a “great victory.” For such a Party, we have only one word left—reckoning.

37 years have passed, and more and more truths are surfacing from provinces and cities outside of Beijing. We see that in Chengdu, Xi’an, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, Zhejiang… countless cities have experienced opening fire to suppress, tank crushing, secret executions, and mass arrests. Those buried corpses, vanished names, and rewritten archives are being dug out piece by piece by survivors, eyewitnesses, and researchers. This proves that June 4th was not an isolated “Beijing Incident,” but a nationwide, premeditated campaign of massacre. The CCP’s fear and hostility toward the people have never been confined to the capital, but are spread throughout the whole of China. After the “June 4th” incident in 1989, a total of over a hundred people in Zhejiang Province were arrested and sentenced to prison terms of varying lengths or to labor re-education. Among them, in the Zhejiang Province Fourth Prison (now Qiaosi Prison) alone, where “June 4th” political prisoners were centrally detained, the number of political prisoners sentenced to terms of over one year reached 45.

Therefore, what we need to do even more today is not to shout empty slogans, but to systematically and tenaciously collect, organize, and preserve all evidence of the massacre: every single bullet, every single death list, every piece of video, every photograph, and every survivor’s testimony. We must drive these evidences like nails into history, making it impossible for anyone to deny them at any time. Only with sufficient evidence can we make the most solid preparations for the future great reckoning. That day will eventually come—not for revenge, but for the judgment of justice, to bring the perpetrators to justice, return fairness to the victims, and restore truth to history.

At the same time, I call upon everyone to continue paying attention to and supporting the construction of the June 4th Memorial Museum, and to pay attention to and support the construction of the Liberty Sculpture Park. This is not the memorial museum or sculpture park of any single organization; this is the memory of our own generation! It belongs to everyone who has ever lit a candle in the darkness, shouted a slogan, lost relatives or friends, gone into exile overseas, sat in prison, been monitored, and who to this day still harbors fear yet refuses to forget. It is our promise to the victims, and it is also the most precious legacy we leave to the next generation: remember the truth, refuse to forget, and pass down the resistance.

Friends, 37 years is not the end, but a new beginning. The CCP can blockade the internet, can delete history, and can continue to maintain its rule through lies and violence, but it cannot blockade human hearts, it cannot erase memories, and it certainly cannot stop the truth from taking root and sprouting underground like seeds.

Let us transform sorrow into strength and memory into action. Continue to collect evidence, continue to support the June 4th Memorial Museum, continue to support the Liberty Sculpture Park, and continue to pass down the spark of June 4th. Until one day, when that evil regime completely collapses, and when freedom, democracy, and the rule of law truly descend upon this land, we can comfort all the departed souls of June 4th:

We have not forgotten. We have been fighting all along. We have finally waited until this day.

I am Chen Liqun, I am in New York, USA. Thank you, everyone.
