Solidarity with Qiao Xinxin, Who Was Suppressed for Participating in the BanGGFW Movement

Qiao Xinxin, a former media professional, was also a participant and promoter of the “BanGGFW Movement” (Great Firewall Removal Movement). In 2023, Qiao Xinxin, together with others, initiated the wall-dismantling action, spreading wall-breaking technologies and the concept of freedom of information to help more people break through the blockade and understand the outside world. It was precisely because of these efforts that he was subjected to a transnational arrest in Laos in May of the same year, and was subsequently prosecuted on charges of “inciting subversion of state power.” In 2024, he was sentenced to five years in prison.
This is not only the suppression of one person, but also the suppression of freedom of speech and freedom of information.
In this era where information should be unobstructed, the CCP has built a firewall, leaving the majority of the 1.4 billion people trapped within an invisible “high wall.” The establishment of the firewall causes information to be filtered, voices to be suppressed, and truth to be concealed. What Qiao Xinxin did was to chisel out cracks in this wall, allowing people to see the real world outside through these narrow slits.
What he disseminated was not just technology, but a concept—a persistence in truth and freedom. What he did was help people leap over the high walls of information blocking. We even more so hope, as Mr. Ren Zhiqiang said: We must work together to push down this wall before our eyes. — Tear down this wall.
History tells us: high walls can exist for a time, but they cannot exist for a lifetime. They can block the light, but they cannot blockade the light forever. Every person who attempts to break through the information blockade is paving the way for those who come after.
His ordeal also reminds us— If we choose silence, injustice will only continue; If someone speaks out, change only then becomes possible. Letting more people know the name of Qiao Xinxin is in itself breaking the blockade; Letting information continue to flow is in itself continuing freedom and continuing the light.
We call for: an end to the suppression and persecution of wall-breaking technical personnel, and the protection of basic freedom of speech and the right to access information. Release all political prisoners!
Freedom of information is not a crime; freedom of speech is not a crime. The high wall may still be there, but the light will ultimately penetrate.
