在一个试图抹去记忆的体制面前,记录,本身就是反抗;

At 2:00 p.m. on April 4, 2026, Liberty Sculpture Park once again became a site witnessing history — the sculpture “Gazing at the Stars · Gao Zhisheng” was officially unveiled.

This is not only an artistic ceremony, but also a public identification of tyranny.

Guests attending the ceremony included Piero Tozzi, Deputy Staff Director of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC); Che Ahn, candidate for Governor of California; Geng He, wife of renowned Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng; Chen Weiming, founder of Liberty Sculpture Park and sculptor; Zhu Yufu, one of the founders of the China Democracy Party; Eddie Romero, U.S. Vietnam War veteran; Zhou Fengsuo, Executive Director of Human Rights in China; Fu Xiqiu, founder of China Aid; Jin Xiuhong, Chairwoman of the China Human Rights Alliance; Fang Zheng, victim of the June Fourth Tiananmen Incident; Taiwanese anti-communist internet influencer Ba Jiong; as well as multiple pro-democracy activists from Hong Kong.

Their presence itself is a position. And what this sculpture points to is a question that has yet to be answered — how can a person, under a state machine, be “completely erased”?

Gao Zhisheng, this lawyer who once defended grassroots citizens, religious believers, and the oppressed, has been forcibly disappeared again since 2017, and for eight years and eight months up to now, there has been no news of him. There has been no verdict, no procedure, and not even a single “proof of existence.” This is not an individual case; this is a system. This is a regime’s systematic eradication of “conscience.”

On that day, hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners and people from various sectors were present. They were not there to “attend an event,” but to prove one thing: memory still exists, and conscience has not yielded.

In the speeches, multiple guests pointed directly to the core issue — the Chinese Communist Party’s long-term suppression of dissidents, religious groups, and rights lawyers has never been an occasional occurrence, but a precisely operated method of rule. To make people silent, to make people disappear, to make fear become the background tone of society. And this sculpture is precisely breaking this silence. It allows a person who has been “disappeared” to stand again and allows a name that has been covered up to be called out once more. It is not commemorating the past but confronting a reality that is still ongoing.

What is truly heavy is not the sculpture itself, but the reason for its existence. As someone who participated in the creative process of Chen Weiming, I personally witnessed the birth of this work from nothing. But the closer one gets to it, the clearer it becomes — this is not only a work of art, but a form of resistance.

In the face of a system that attempts to erase memory, to record is, in itself, resistance.to speak out is, in itself, action.

They made him disappear.

And we make him be seen.
