我家祖上是贩卖安化黑茶去川西藏地销售的,在因缘和合下得受宁玛派僧人教化,世代相传到我是第七代。我从小就在佛堂里长大,耳濡目染爷爷和其弟子们举办法事,我在旁边得受教化;十一岁因为家庭变故,得蒙绿度母慈悲庇护,从而逃离地狱。然后我流离失所,无家可归,机缘巧合而开始经商,直到33岁;期间每有变故,也多次被随身所带佛珠佛牌所救助,才幸免遇难。29岁的一天晚上,正当我被世俗纠缠,痛不欲生之时,一首(千手千眼大悲陀罗尼咒)将我拯救,当天,明悟太极双鱼图对世间众生的奥义,于是追寻佛陀解脱正法;

A Brief Discussion on Welcoming the New Living Buddha: Perspectives from Han Chinese Disciples
Author: Wu Zhanke Editor: Zhang Zhijun Proofreader: Feng Reng Translator: Ge Bing
Namo Shakyamuni Buddha! Homage to Guru Padmasambhava! Homage to all venerable masters! To all fellow practitioners on the path of genuine cultivation, Om Mani Padme Hum! To all followers of Tibetan Buddhism, Tashi Delek!
My ancestors were merchants who sold Anhua black tea in Sichuan and Tibet. Through a series of fortunate circumstances, they received teachings from Nyingma monks, and this tradition has been passed down through the generations—I am the seventh in line. I grew up in a Buddhist chapel, observing my grandfather and his disciples conducting rituals, and receiving their teachings from a young age. At the age of eleven, due to a family tragedy, I was mercifully protected by Green Tara and thus escaped from a living hell. I then became homeless and adrift, but by a stroke of fate, I began a career in business, which I pursued until I was 33; During that time, whenever I faced adversity, the Buddhist prayer beads and amulets I carried with me saved me on numerous occasions, sparing me from disaster. One night when I was 29, just as I was entangled in worldly affairs and in such agony that I wished to die, the “Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Great Compassion Dharani Mantra” rescued me. That very day, I gained profound insight into the profound meaning of the Tai Chi Double Fish Diagram for all sentient beings in the world, and thus I set out to seek the Buddha’s Dharma of liberation;
In 2016, I traveled to the ancestral temples of Han Buddhism—Baimasi Temple in Luoyang, Henan, and Daci’en Temple in Xi’an, Shaanxi—to seek the Dharma, but to no avail. While on Xi’an’s Antique Street, I saw a painting of the Buddha; a portrait depicting the Buddha preaching to the Goddess of Children and the Four Heavenly Kings fell from the wall and struck me three times, so I reverently invited it home to venerate.
In 2018, following in the footsteps of the ancestors, I traveled to Ganzi Monastery in Ganzi County, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan, as well as the Serta Five Sciences Buddhist College to seek the Dharma. Upon arriving at the monastery, I felt an inexplicable sense of homecoming and warmth; however, because I was of Han ethnicity, I was unable to ordain and study the Dharma. Since my family home had been destroyed, all the Buddhist statues, thangkas, scriptures, gabala ritual implements, and vajra staffs passed down from my ancestors were lost. I had no choice but to return to my hometown, where I built a Buddhist shrine to venerate my spiritual teacher and the Bodhisattvas, as well as to secretly pay homage to the Dalai Lama. After the chapel was set up, I received an empowerment from Avalokiteshvara while meditating. That night, as I climbed a mountain with dark clouds overhead, I chanted the Great Compassion Mantra and was suddenly struck by a thought: Is my destiny truly bound to the Buddha? If so, please let me see the full moon in this pitch-black darkness where I cannot even see my hand in front of my face. After finishing the mantra and paying respects to the south, the dark clouds suddenly began to part, revealing a small sliver of the moon and the starry sky—a sight that stood in stark contrast to the surrounding darkness. This strengthened my resolve, and I developed the mind of renunciation. From then on, I worked out at the gym during the day and secretly studied the Dharma late at night when all was quiet.
In 2019, on the birthday of Amitabha Buddha—known in Han Chinese tradition as the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life—after paying homage and making offerings in the Buddha hall, I vowed to cultivate the supreme bodhicitta. Guided by the Buddha, I contemplated the verses of the Seven Buddhas of the Past and attained enlightenment, entering the realm of Prajñā. I prostrated before Guru Padmasambhava and contemplated the supreme meaning of the Guru’s mandala.
In 2020, having attained realization and entrusted by Earth Store Bodhisattva, I expounded the *Sutra of the Original Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva*, hoping that all sentient beings might come to see the Bodhicitta deeply hidden within the depths of their own inner worlds.
In 2021, while expounding a simplified version of the *Diamond Sutra*, I informed sentient beings that all phenomena in the world are impermanent and should not be clung to.
In 2022, while expounding on the *Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Law*, during the chapter on Avalokiteshvara’s Universal Gate, I remained awake for four days and five nights, and wisdom manifested like a golden lotus emerging from the earth.
In April 2023, following the Buddha’s teachings, I translated and expounded all my Buddhist wisdom into 23 volumes of easy-to-understand notes for those with karmic affinity to study. The Buddha then instructed me to travel to the West to spread the Dharma and bring an end to the Latter Age of the Dharma. However, due to strained relations between India and China, I was unable to obtain an Indian visa and could not travel to India to join the Dalai Lama. I had no choice but to risk my life and embark on a clandestine journey to the United States to spread the Dharma. By the grace of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I survived numerous perilous situations and narrowly escaped death, ultimately succeeding in reaching the United States. My heartfelt aspiration is to emulate the Dalai Lama of old, leading many sages to India to plant the seeds of the Bodhi Dharma, thereby preserving numerous precious Buddhist esoteric teachings and ensuring that the wisdom of our forebears is passed down through the ages.
Thanks to the unique advantages of the Tibetan region, Tibetan Buddhism has maintained a lineage of living Buddhas who have passed down teachings through the generations, preaching with compassion to enlighten all sentient beings; unlike Han Buddhism, which has experienced a break in the transmission of wisdom. This is the fundamental reason why every person in Tibet believes in Buddhism, whereas people in Han regions believe only in money. We all know that without faith, a person cannot be happy; they will only sink into the blood-red sea of desire. It is even more impossible for them to comprehend the wisdom of the Three Jewels, the Wish-fulfilling Gem. The sharp sword of Prajñā wisdom cannot sever worldly desires, and the Eight Auspicious Symbols remain out of reach. Therefore, compared to Han Chinese or other ethnic minorities, Tibetans in the cycle of the Six Realms occupy the upper three realms—Heaven, Human, and Asura—while the others dwell in the lower three realms: the Animal, Hungry Ghost, and Hell realms. One knows contentment, while the other’s desires are insatiable; one is sincere and kind, while the other deceives and swindles; one sows abundant good karma, achieving a light and agile body and mind, rising early and retiring early, purifying the body before going to the temple to spin prayer wheels and cleanse the soul, while the other sows widespread evil karma, leading to sinking into the sea of suffering, becoming numb and degenerate, dragging an exhausted body while living a life of pretense. They even allow themselves to become the very person they once despised most. The Buddha’s wisdom teaches us how to live and act, helping sentient beings understand where they have gone wrong and how to awaken from the path of error to escape suffering. This is the true, supreme root guru!
Everyone will die, but not everyone has truly lived. How to break free from the vortex of desire and rediscover our inherently kind selves—this is the true meaning of life! Everyone and everything you love will eventually leave you; everyone and everything you care about—or dislike—will not last forever. This is the natural course of all conditioned phenomena in the world, and none of us can change it! Yet we can do our utmost, using all our effort and talent, to ensure that the fleeting beauty of the night-blooming cereus is witnessed by as many people as possible. Within each of us lies a Bodhicitta—an innate quality as inherent as the Buddha-nature, as clear and pure as the source of the Yellow River, as crystalline as lapis lazuli! It is only through constant pollution that it becomes murky and unrecognizable. We all have a Buddha within our hearts; it is simply that, as long as we remain unawakened, we cannot see it. If there is no Buddha within the nation, the king must rule and command the people to labor. Yet since the king himself has not awakened, the people are a mixed bag of good and bad. Thus, their various incarnations and occupations differ, and the karma they create varies accordingly. Only within the ten directions of the realm of the mind—where, one day, a citizen’s incarnation suddenly attains enlightenment regarding the true essence of the Dharma—will Bodhisattvas from the ten directions of the realm of the mind gather to listen to the Buddha’s teachings. It is like a child who has been lost and wandering since childhood finally returning to the embrace of his parents to enjoy their love and compassion.
Some believe that the Six Realms of Rebirth exist only after death, but I believe they exist right here in this world. For example, those in the hell realm cannot bear to see others prosper; they make no effort themselves, yet envy and resent others’ achievements, leading them to engage in all sorts of destructive acts that harm others without benefiting themselves. For instance, those in the realm of hungry ghosts are perpetually insatiable; even if they possess boundless wealth, mansions, luxury cars, and beautiful partners, their desires remain unquenchable, and they remain as ravenous as mythical beasts. For instance, those in the animal realm lack any sense of morality, driven solely by their own desires. Even a tiger, though vicious, does not eat its own young, yet such individuals spare not even their own children, depriving them of even a shred of familial warmth and happiness. The children spend their days longing to escape these clutches as soon as possible; if given a choice, they would absolutely refuse to come into this world to suffer. And why do we say that those in the Three Evil Realms are constantly enduring the immeasurable torments of Avici Hell, seeking even a moment’s respite but finding none? Building on what was discussed earlier, if someone, due to causes from a past life, is reborn into such a family, they are not inherently virtuous. They have not yet learned how to conduct themselves or handle affairs, nor have they received a proper education. Their only “achievement” is having fulfilled the human duty of procreation. Their manners, character, and cultural refinement are as close to rock bottom as possible—in other words, they have no bottom line. You can never fully fathom just how depraved they might become. They cannot bear to see their children living well; they must make their children endure the same hardships they once suffered—and even intensify them—taking pleasure in the process of abuse. Some are even curious, trying to put themselves in their children’s shoes at that time, believing this is the only way to keep the children under their control and make them obey. Selfish and self-serving, they are unwilling to offer their children any help beyond a few words of caution to “be careful,” “don’t get scammed,” they constantly expect endless rewards. Their sole focus is on receiving returns, treating their children as tools to satisfy their own desires, and causing them endless trouble—all to preserve their so-called “face.” They may even incite their children to commit crimes while washing their own hands of the matter, leaving the children to take the fall, all while feigning righteousness to protect their “face”; They shirk their parental responsibilities entirely, yet beat their children senseless with righteous indignation. They never listen to reason, bully the weak and fear the strong, exploit others’ kindness without a shred of shame, and even shamelessly twist right and wrong, taking selfishness to the extreme. He or she never wants to give, only to take, and is most skilled at using morality to manipulate children or others, demanding that others meet the standards of sages while holding themselves to the standards of scum. He or she will never know what gratitude or appreciation means. To achieve their goals, they will stop at nothing, even extinguishing their humanity, disbelieving in cause and effect, and committing boundless sins without any limits. Because they are obsessed with emptiness, they have no qualms and will continuously commit evil deeds that harm those around them; their actions are beyond what ordinary people dare to imagine. Some may question why the term “it” is used here. Don’t be hasty; let me explain the truth. They will rape their own young daughters, nieces, granddaughters—even five- or six-year-old girls—and some are so utterly depraved that they do not spare even infants in swaddling clothes. Their bestial acts are even aided by the children’s mothers and grandmothers. If the children disobey, they are denied food, beaten, and punished. They are even enslaved through controlling rhetoric like “family shame must not be aired publicly” and “all parents have their faults,” all to force the children to generate profit for them. Once the girl grows a bit older, they force her into prostitution to earn money to support them; when she is older and the time is right, they sell her off for a high dowry to help her brothers marry and start families. But the exploitation never stops—they continue to brainwash her, constantly moving her belongings back to her parents’ home, unconcerned even if it leads to the young couple’s divorce. Their sole focus is their own gain, and they may even incite divorce to divide the family assets. Once they’ve squeezed every last drop of value from her, they either abandon her to fend for herself, regardless of her survival, or they remarry her off to start another round of exploitation. This depends on their conscience and the actual circumstances—there are all kinds of people out there. When they grow old, they’ll call her back to serve and care for them until their deaths; these women are exploited nonstop from birth to death, never ceasing. No matter how much you give, they will never be satisfied. They will even shock you by teaching you that you can treat your own children this way! As long as they live well while they’re alive, they couldn’t care less if the world goes to hell after they die. This is the horror of clinging to emptiness. This is why the Three Evil Realms are called the Lower Three Realms, and why those who cling to emptiness are called “untouchables”—because “those who associate with the red become red; those who associate with the black become black.”
In authoritarian states, such incidents are all too common. In the name of political stability, the regime is obsessed with covering up the truth and concealing its mistakes, leading to a steady decline in social morality, while those who commit every conceivable evil remain unpunished; Instead of addressing the problems, they eliminate those who raise them, making themselves a laughingstock to the world. Children born to such parents may spend their entire lives trying to heal from the trauma; some cannot bear the torment and die—which, in a way, is a blessing, for dying is easy, but living is far harder. Some are blessed with good parents, taking pride in their achievements, while others endure a life more agonizing than the boundless torments of Avici Hell. Those in the Asura realm are often filled with anger; they are prone to letting rage consume them, losing their wisdom and causing irreversible consequences, often regretting their actions afterward. Meanwhile, those in the human realm tend to think only of themselves; yet many believe that since the events aren’t happening to them—and since they aren’t the ones suffering—and since it doesn’t conflict with their own interests, they can easily criticize others without feeling the pain. But once such events befall them personally, who knows what will become of them. Those in the heavenly realms are generally wise and discerning; they understand how to strive for progress and make amends. Therefore, the Dharma is taught at the very least among the heavenly beings, for only those at this level can truly grasp how to emulate the virtuous.
Whether you like it or not, the evolution of the universe will not cease, nor will the operation of heaven and earth and all things. The ever-turning millstone of the Six Realms of Rebirth will not stop crushing us; and we have no choice but to change ourselves. If the mind does not die, the Way cannot be born. As long as the demon within our hearts refuses to retreat, the Buddha cannot manifest and dwell in this world; we cannot break free from the cycle of reincarnation across the Six Realms, nor can we, as true men, sever all worldly desires, much less achieve purity and liberation. We cannot choose our birth, but we can choose our future path. I offer myself as proof to all of you: there is no wall in this world that cannot be broken, especially when everyone believes it to be indestructible—that is precisely when it is most fragile!
If his or her parents had received the teachings of an enlightened living Buddha—one capable of instructing through both word and deed—on how to conduct oneself, how to be a parent, and how to set an example for one’s own children, or even to treat others’ children with compassion and mercy—if they had been taught not to neglect even the smallest acts of kindness nor to commit even the slightest wrongdoing—how much could this have reduced the accumulation of evil deeds and their consequences? And what of the ripples of the butterfly effect across three lifetimes of cause and effect?
It is precisely because of the unbroken lineage of living Buddhas across so many generations that the lamps before the Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism have never been extinguished; that the water offerings before the Buddha have never run dry; that the prayer wheels have never ceased turning; that the sound of chanting has never been silenced… The wind carries the sound of our wisdom ever higher and farther; water carries our wisdom to ever broader horizons; fire shines the light of our Prajna wisdom upon the darkness of the ten directions; earth manifests our Bodhi wisdom like a golden lotus emerging from the earth.
Therefore, as one who has attained enlightenment, I sincerely hope that the system of living Buddhas will be preserved and further exalted. Once I have received my official status, I will immediately travel to India with Mr. Chen Weiming, the sculptor from Freedom Sculpture Park, to pay my respects to His Holiness the Dalai Lama!
Finally, due to my limited knowledge, writing skills, time, and energy—as I volunteer during the day and write at night—I can only write whatever comes to mind. If there are any errors or omissions, I ask for the forgiveness of all the wise ones!
Once again, thank you all. May the Buddha’s compassion bring an early end to the Age of the Dharma’s Decline and usher in a golden age of the Dharma.
