A Man of Iron Will Never Looked Back, the Truth Awaits Redress — The Chinese Democracy and Human Rights Alliance Commemorates the 14th Anniversary of Li Wangyang’s Murder

Author: Shen Meihua

On the afternoon of June 13, 2026, the Chinese Democracy and Human Rights Alliance, along with local community members, held a commemorative event in front of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, themed “Mourning the June Fourth Man of Iron Will Li Wangyang, Demanding the Truth of His Death from the CCP.” This event was held to honor the memory of this pioneer of the democratic movement, who dedicated his entire life to the cause of China’s democracy and ultimately passed away with his grievances unredressed.

The event was initiated and organized by the Western America Branch of the Chinese Democratic Activists Alliance. At 2:00 PM, several democracy activists gathered in front of the Chinese Consulate, holding banners and placards. Display boards were set up at the scene, bearing slogans such as “The 14th Anniversary of the Murder of June Fourth Man of Iron Will Li Wangyang” and “A Man of Iron Will Never Looks Back.”

During the rally, Mr. Zhu Yufu, one of the founders of the China Democracy Party and a veteran democracy activist, was the first to deliver a speech. He reviewed Mr. Li Wangyang’s life of hardships endured in the struggle for democracy and freedom, highly praising his unyielding character and integrity. He also pointed out that the truth behind Li Wangyang’s death remains unexplained to this day, serving as a critical testament to the continuous deterioration of human rights in China.

Led by Mr. Zhu Yufu, several democracy activists took the stage one after another to speak. They severely condemned the Chinese Communist Party for its long-standing one-party dictatorship, its political persecution of dissidents, and its systematic suppression of citizens’ basic rights. They demanded that the authorities disclose the truth about Li Wangyang’s death and hold those responsible accountable. Through speeches and other forms of expression, the participants conveyed their remembrance and respect for Li Wangyang.

Born in 1950, Li Wangyang was a prominent democracy activist from Shaoyang, Hunan. Since participating in the Chinese democracy movement in the 1980s, he was repeatedly arrested and imprisoned by the CCP authorities for his persistent struggle for freedom, democracy, and workers’ rights. His prolonged prison life left him blind, severely hearing-impaired, and with irreversible damage to his health.

However, even under the harshest suppression, Li Wangyang still refused to bow his head.

Around the time of the “June Fourth” commemoration in 2012, Li Wangyang openly stated during an interview with overseas media that he never regretted his past participation in the democracy movement and would continue to adhere to his democratic ideals. Just a few days later, he was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The authorities quickly announced his death as a “suicide by hanging.” However, because the conditions at the scene directly contradicted the official conclusion, it triggered intense skepticism and outcry both at home and abroad. To this day, the CCP authorities have failed to provide any convincing explanation for the key questions raised by the public.

At the conclusion of the speeches, the participants chanted slogans together, including “Restore the Truth,” “Down with the CCP,” “Overthrow the CCP Regime,” and “Return Democracy and Freedom to the People,” to express their stance and demands for continued attention to this event.

Although the commemorative event held in front of the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles was limited in scale, it still garnered a certain amount of attention within the overseas Chinese community. The organizers stated that they will continue to promote the documentation of and reflection on historical events through commemoration, dissemination, and public discussion in the future, and they called on society to maintain continuous attention to relevant human rights issues.
